First Look: The Mason Raw is a versatile steel RIB made in the UK

You may never have heard of Mason before. This is a small British brand offering a range of road, gravel and adventure bikes, all with buckled handlebars. But now they’ve released their first flat-bar mountain bike, the Mason Raw.

This is a steel frame hardtail, made in the UK and designed for trail running, travel, biking … whatever you want, really. It has no less than fifteen bosses for mounting bottles, bags and other accessories, but it also has a 120mm fork and geometry that wouldn’t out of place on an aggressive hardtail. The specification is also highly customizable, so it looks like there are plenty of ways to use this bike.

Raw mason details
• Intended use: “Trail & Travel”
• Made in UK with Dedacciai / Reynolds steel tubing
• Fork travel: 120 mm
• Wheels: 29 in.
• Claimed frame weight: 2.4 – 2.67 kg
• Seat angle 75.1 °, head angle 66 ° (sagging)
• Sizes: S, M, L, XL
• Price: £ 1,695 (frame only) to £ 4,195 (XT Launch version)

The frame features a traditional non-drop top tube, designed to provide more room to store the frame bags inside the spacious front triangle. The tubes are studded with bosses for bolting various kit pieces together, including rack mounts and bosses under the down tube and on the top tube. You can even specify male (outer) bosses on the seat tube to allow you to operate a long dropper rod without regular bottle cage bolts limiting insertion depth. The point is, you can charge it with enough kit for a relatively comfortable ride lasting several days. Alternatively, you can just hang a water bottle on it and take a hot ride.

Speaking of which, the geometry of the Raw looks a lot more fun than your typical bike hardtail. There is a head angle of 66 degrees (measured at sag) and an effective seat angle of 75.1 to 75.4 degrees (depending on size). Reach ranges from 426mm (S) to 491mm (XL), and the bike is fitted with either 35mm or 45mm stems, which should help keep handling relatively confident on steep, technical terrain. Sure, there are looser hardtails these days, but Mason didn’t want too much wheel flop when the bike is loaded.

The frame is made from a combination of Reynolds and Dedacciai Zero and Zero UNO tubes, all made in Europe. The tubes are then shaped and welded together by Five Land Bikes, based near Edinburgh, Scotland, and also working with Cotic and Swarf.
