Carbon Wasp Truffle 120mm Carbon MTB Made in UK
Carbon Wasp owner and bike designer Adrian Smith calls the new Wasp 120mm a “strong and stiff” carbon trail bike developed to balance efficient climbing to get you up the hills and a plush ride to get you up the hill. take advantage of the “turbulence on the way back”.
“We wanted to create a bike that can do it all, a true “go to” bike for all trail conditions. The Truffle is light and predictable for climbing, nimble for singletrack and rugged for technical descents. We basically made the bike we want to ride, a bike that would be at home on the XC race circuit or criss-cross the local woods.“, describes Smith.
Modern trail geometry
Even though the short-travel bike walks the line between XC and trail, Carbon Wasp says the Truffle is built to tackle all kinds of trails. Geometry-wise, they call it Modern Trail, with a longer frame reach, slack 65.5° head angle and steep 76° seat tube (already paired with a matching 120mm fork) .
Plus, those “120mm of plush, progressive rear travel” can be balanced with anything from a 120mm XC fork for less aggressive singletrack and trails, or up to a beefier trail fork. 140mm for a more technical and steeper ride.
The Carbon Wasp Truffle is a 120mm full suspension bike that’s completely handcrafted in Yorkshire, right down to the full carbon shock linkage. It also includes a nice storage opening in the downtube to keep spares low and protected inside the frame.
Carbon Wasp has been manufacturing carbon bike components and frames for other brands from its West Yorkshire workshop for several years. But as mountain bikers themselves, Carbon Wasp really wanted to create their own perfect trail bike. The Truffle has been in development for several years and, from the looks of things, has undergone several evolutions, appearing to reduce travel while retaining a progressive nature for all-around trail duties.
“When designing the Truffle, the goal was to create a frame that could be integrated into an XC race bike that was light, but also tough enough to tackle the most technical descents. It’s not designed for bike park laps, but it could handle it if you occasionally needed it for.”
The inner carbon layup itself took 3 years to hone, while balancing a reliable supply of British sourced prepreg fiber with which Carbon Wasp constructs the truffle.
The Truffle features fully sealed bearing pivots for UK durability, internal cable routing, stealth 30.9mm dropper post compatibility, classic BSA threaded bottom bracket, Boost rear spacing 148, a replaceable derailleur hanger, a few ISCG chain guide tabs and a single cage-mount bottle.
The 1800g frame (without rear shock) includes a heavy-duty rubber downtube guard and chainstay protector to keep the frame secure and running quiet over rough terrain, and features UK tire clearance for 29 x 2.4″ (tires?).
